<strong>onscrn and JRH.</strong>

I couldn't agree with you more. Although there has been some good media coverage of the LHC it has been limited and usual accompanied by a snide remark from one of the news readers, or another article, along the lines of "scientists are evil bastards trying to destroy the world". The sad thing is some people really do believe what they hear from the media, particularly when the scaremongering is coming from a supposedly reputable source, such as the BBC. Even sadder that some believe the content of the Sun and KKKly Mail; two papers that would print pretty much anything to sell a few extra copies to their - often - narrow-minded bigoted ill-informed readers.

<strong>John Miller</strong>
The scientists behind the LHC have done an outstanding job trying to explain to the layman what the point of the LHC is and why it wasn't going to destroy the world/universe. <a href="http://public.web.cern.ch/public/en/LHC/LHC-en.html rel="nofollow">On their website</a> there is a detailed explanation of the entire thing. If the people who are concerned about the LHC got off their backsides and bothered to learn about it, rather than repeating parrot-fashion the concerns of their favourite columnist (whose views usually reinforce their own prejudice) maybe they would have realised there really was nothing to worry about.

Oh, it's so nice to be at the end of Wednesday, feeling smug.

"So far the scientists have behaved in a pig headed and arrogant manner(much like this editor)in dealing with peoples fears and concerns"

Because, of course, it's downright pig-headed to explain that this sort of thing (particles colliding and all that) happens EVERY DAY, that the big scary tunnels are to enable the CERN team to CONTROL the particles they are studying (so that they can observe them).

Bastards. Selfish boffins the lot of them.

ROFLMAO

On a more serious note, why is it the job of the scientific community to allay the fears that have arisen out of a pig ignorant public being wound up by a mischievous (or stupid) press?

I'd rather the scientists got on with the science, to be honest. (And that idiots stopped buying the Daily Hate). But maybe that's just me.

I thoroughly enjoyed (to the point of laughing) reading your replies. Unfortunately, all that's required to create the impression that there is a real controversy is one or two people with enough legal knowledge to file lawsuits to stop an experiment. Add a totally misleading internet and media campaign, and everyone thinks that alarmed "scientists" are trying to halt the LHC.

There is really nothing there at all. I can't believe what a free ride Rössler, who seems thoroughly nuts, has been given. I've written about the situation and the personalities on my blog post "Large Hadron Collider: What’s the Risk?"

If theres even 1 in a 10 billion chance that this experiment could destroy the earth then thats too much.
